Purpose
Questions about purpose are old. The Bible says more about what kind of people to be than about which path to choose: to love God, to love a neighbor, and to do the good that is in front of them. These passages are the ones most often read on the subject.
Passages to start with
Matthew 22:36-40
Asked for the greatest commandment, Jesus names two: to love God with heart, soul and mind, and to “love your neighbor as yourself”.
Micah 6:8
The prophet sums up what God asks: “to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God”.
Ephesians 2:8-10
Paul places purpose after grace: people are saved as a gift, and are “created in Christ Jesus for good works”.
Colossians 3:23-24
Ordinary work is given weight: “whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men”.
Jeremiah 29:10-13
Verse 11 is often quoted as a personal promise. It was first written to exiles in Babylon who were told to wait seventy years, and it shows God’s intent toward his people: “to give you hope and a future”.
