Growing closer to God
The Bible describes growing closer to God with slow, living pictures: staying, being rooted, walking, bearing fruit. These passages give the main ones. The growth they describe is God’s work in a person, and it is not a technique.
Passages to start with
John 15:4-5
Jesus pictures himself as a vine and his followers as branches: fruit comes from staying connected, “for apart from me you can do nothing”.
Psalm 1:1-3
The first psalm compares a person who keeps returning to God’s teaching to “a tree planted by the streams of water”.
James 4:8
A direct call with a promise attached: “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you”.
Colossians 2:6-7
Paul describes the Christian life as continuing the way it began, “rooted and built up in him”, with thanksgiving.
Psalm 119:105
Scripture is described as light for the next step: “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path”.
