What this chapter says

The tabernacle is finished, anointed and made holy, and the leaders of Israel come with gifts. The twelve princes bring six covered wagons and twelve oxen. The LORD tells Moses to accept them and give them to the Levites. Gershon receives two wagons and four oxen, Merari four wagons and eight oxen. Kohath gets none, since their duty is to carry the holy things on their shoulders.

Then, for twelve days, one prince each day brings the same offering for the altar: a silver platter of 130 shekels, a silver bowl of 70, a golden ladle of ten shekels full of incense, and a long list of animals. The chapter names each prince and each day, and repeats the gift every time. In the end the totals are added up. The chapter closes quietly: Moses goes into the Tent, and he hears the LORD speaking to him from above the mercy seat.

Background

This is the longest chapter in the first half of Numbers, and its repetition has a purpose: every tribe is named and every gift is counted, so that none is forgotten or placed above another. The chapter looks back to the setting up of the tabernacle in Exodus 40. The wagons ease the work of the Levites described in Numbers 4. The last verse shows the purpose of it all, that God speaks to Moses from the mercy seat.
