What this chapter says

This chapter belongs to David's house. It begins in Hebron, where David reigned seven years and six months, and where six sons were born: Amnon first, then Daniel, Absalom, Adonijah, Shephatiah and Ithream. In Jerusalem, where he reigned thirty-three years, more sons were born, and Solomon is among them, a son of Bathshua. Tamar is named as their sister.

Then the line runs down through the kings of Judah: Solomon's son Rehoboam, then Abijah, Asa, Jehoshaphat, and on through Hezekiah, Manasseh and Josiah. The sons of Josiah are named. After them comes Jeconiah, called the captive, and the line goes on beyond the exile. Shealtiel appears, and Pedaiah, and then Zerubbabel, the name associated with the return from Babylon. The chapter ends with Zerubbabel's descendants, generation after generation, down to the sons of Elioenai.

Background

The writer keeps the line of David alive past the fall of Jerusalem, which is the point of the chapter. The kings listed here are told in detail in the books of Kings, see 2 Samuel 3 and 5 for David's early family. The family of David carried the promise of a lasting house, see 2 Samuel 7. Christian readers connect this line with Matthew 1 and Luke 3, and the two Gospel lists differ in ways readers explain differently.
